WISH YOU WERE HERE

Where Past Times Meets Modern

In the tiny place in the Middle East called Israel human cultures were born and flourished during 3000 years of history.

Israel is a crossroad of cultures, continents and climates, all of them merging together into a whirlpool of scents and colors.

The result is fascinating with breathtaking landscapes, starting with the snow capped Mt. Hermon in the north to some of the harshest deserts in the world in the south, the deep blue Mediterranean Sea in the west and the Dead Sea in the east.

No wonder 3 great monotheist religions were born out of all this; Judaism, Christianity and Islam. Each one of them embraces its holy places here.

Many men walked the country; from Abraham and Moses unto Jesus and Mohammed.

Nordic Walking Israel is honored to invite Nordic Walkers of the world to follow in their footsteps and experience this paradise for hikers, as we wish you were here!

We planned 4 days of Nordic walking in the wonderful sceneries of Israel and another 4 days of sightseeing to experience the country with her many faces.

The tour will be accompanied by a local guide. At the hiking paths a Dutch-speaking local Nordic walking trainer will be present.

The tour is organized by Egged Tours, one of the first tourism companies in Israel.

Itinerary:

Day 1: Departure

Today we embark on our journey to the Holy Land. Prepare yourself for a life-changing experience. Get some rest on the flight…

Arriving in Israel:

We arrive at Ben Gurion Airport in the very early morning. Here we will meet our Israeli guide who will accompany us during our entire stay in Israel. We will travel northward by bus to our guesthouse in the Upper Galilee.

On the way we will stop for breakfast at the old city of Caesarea.

We will start our hike for the day (optional) at the Banias Reserve – a beautiful nature reserve in the north of Israel.

Total walking distance: 5 km. (average 3 hours).

Arrival at the guesthouse at kibbutz Kfar Giladi in the early afternoon. Time to take a rest. Evening meal at the guesthouse.

day 1  day 1

Day 2:

After breakfast, we will start our hike for the day at Tel Chai - the northern point of the famous Israel Trail (total of 940 km). We walk along the Naphtali mountain range. We follow the ridge until the fortress of Koach, a spectacular vantage point overlooking the Hachula Valley.

Afternoon at the old city of Zefat, one of the 4 holy cities for Judaism. Zefat is one of the centers of Kabala, the mystical teachings. It is a colorful artists' colony as well

Total walking distance: 18 km.

Day 3:

Breakfast and another day of hiking. Today we follow a trail on the Golan Heights, a basalt plateau. We are surrounded by some amazing and colorful flowers of Israel and its unique landscapes.

We will have a lunch box on the way, and we’ll continue to a fun and wet afternoon of rafting on the Jordan River: After organization and safety-guidance you will enter the Jordan-river by canoe. The rafting passes between typical sceneries. We will pass the Bnot-Jacob Bridge; here the river becomes faster, because it’s getting to a route where the path is natural. Evening meal at the guesthouse.

Total walking distance: 22 km.

day 3   day 3

Day 4:

Today we will walk from Bnot-Jacob Bridge, along the Jordan highlands to the community Almagor, which overlooks the Sea of Galilee. A very special track, challenging and fun.

We continue by bus, arrive at Tabcha – the site of the biblical Miracle of the Loaves and Fish. Then we will continue to Capernaum. In Capernaum we will visit the ruins of an ancient synagogue and Peter’s home. We will continue to the Mount of the Beatitudes overlooking the Sea of Galilee. From here we take a boat, and make a short cruise to Tiberius where we will have a fish-meal for dinner.

Total walking distance: 30 km.

Day 5:

We leave the guesthouse and will arrive at Nazareth - hometown of Jesus and one of the most sacred Christian places. Here stands the church of the Annunciation that is believed to be built at the exact place where Angel Gabriel announced to Mary that she would give birth.

Next to it stands the St. Joseph church; according to tradition, here used to be the carpentry workshop of Joseph, Mary's husband. Some of the traditions also claim this was Joseph's house. The church reflects the Jewish roots of Christianity: in the past, Christian tradition accepted the Jewish bathing commandment and ritual baths were built in the church to do so.

The Old Market of Nazareth is one of the most fascinating markets in Israel. Its special charm is in the fact that this is not a common tourist market. It maintains a lively, active merchant atmosphere, attracting customers from the city and its surroundings. So does the entrance to El Basharra Street (the Annunciation Street) have a famous large group of traditional candy shops. This is the place to enjoy the famous hot Nazareth kenafi.

Day 6: Tel Aviv:

We will start at the Tel Aviv port. Once the most important port of an early Hebrew settlement it is now one of the most attractive nightlife spots of modern Tel Aviv. Walking along the seashore, on the city’s promenade, accompanied by our professional tour guide, we will enjoy Tel Aviv’s famous beaches, its architecture, learn about various historic events and listen to many interesting stories.

We will enter the very first neighborhood of Tel Aviv, Neve Tzedek, which was established at the beginning of the 20th century. Today it is a vibrant artist colony, not to be missed.

We will then continue to the Old city of Jaffa - an ancient fortified city with one of the world’s oldest, still operating ports. It's a charming old place of narrow streets, ancient architecture, and most beautiful views on Tel Aviv.

Later that day we will keep going south to the Negev area. . Arrival in the early afternoon and a camel tour. We will stay over at Kfar Hanokdim and spend the night in the traditional way of the Bedouins on mattresses and with a sleeping bag in traditional tents. As evening meal we will have a rich Bedouin "Chafla".

Rooms with private shower and beds available against extra payment.

day 6  day 6

We will start the day with black Bedouin coffee and cookies before climbing up to the ancient Masada fortress at sunrise. We enjoy a short tour on the top and will get down by the snake trail or by cable car as preferred. We will have breakfast at the guesthouse of Masada.

Masada is a rugged natural fortress, of majestic beauty, in the Judean Desert overlooking the Dead Sea. It is a symbol of the ancient kingdom of Israel, its violent destruction and the last stand of Jewish patriots in the face of the

Roman army, in 73 A.D. 960 Jews committed suicide here and today it is one of the Jewish people's greatest symbols.

We will have a wonderful time swimming in the Dead Sea and floating on the salted water. We will then go to the “Ein Gedi spa”: Situated on the shores of the Dead Sea and overlooking the impressive Moab mountains of Jordan.

Lunch in the spa.

For the night we drive to Jerusalem.
